Call to Worship

Into the house of God we are called to enter,

to worship and receive the gift of grace.

As we step towards this sacred space,

we acknowledge all that can distract or exploit.

God calls upon us to cleanse our houses of all that does not find its source in God’s love.

Together we give ourselves in worship and right relations with our neighbor.     Let us worship God.

Sermon                       “Prophetic Jesus”                                  Dr. Keith Ray

Thoughts to ponder: Today we read the story of Jesus driving people out of the place of worship. Often called the “Cleansing of the Temple,” it is sometimes a favorite story because it gives us an image of an angry Jesus driving out injustice.  And yet, it invites us to ask what news to be driven out of our own lives and institutions. One commentator says: “Tempting as it might be to offer up a sermon on this text in which we take up our own whip of cords and overturn the tables of our favorite injustices, the text pushes us to imagine Jesus entering our own sanctuaries, overturning our own cherished rationalizations and driving us out in the name of God.  Surely we can be honest enough to acknowledge that often enough we put ourselves and our institutions at the service of powers that are decidedly less than God” (Paul Shupe, Feasting on the Word, Year B. Volume 2).
