Call to Worship

When the way is difficult and dangerous,
let us still choose what is good and just.

When evil comes to break us down and break us apart,
let us still choose to carry on with each other.

When power from on high strikes fear in our hearts,
let us still choose the courage to persist.

For we know that the love and power of God, which abides in us, will not be overcome.

Opening Hymn       “Morning Has Broken”          Hymnal #664

Words by Eleanor Farjeon; Music is a Gaelic melody

      1)  Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird.

Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh

            from the Word!

    2)  Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass.

Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where God’s feet pass.

     3)  Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning, born of the one light Eden saw play!

Praise with elation; praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new day!

Scripture Lesson                Mark 1:21-28

Sermon               “The Healing Service”                Dr. Keith Ray

Thoughts: Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is portrayed as a healer.

What do these narratives have to say to us?  The whole idea of healing can put us in mind of a religious huckster, but is there something to learn from the healing ministry of Jesus?  Perhaps.

Prayers of the People

Closing Hymn and Offertory    “We Come to You for Healing, Lord”         Hymnal #796

1)  We come to you for healing, Lord, of body, mind, and soul,

and pray that by your Spirit’s touch we may again be whole.

2)  As once you walked through ancient streets and reached toward those in pain,

we know you come among us still with power to heal again.

3)  You touch us through physicians’ skills, through nurses’ gifts of care,

and through the love of faithful friends who lift our lives in prayer.

4)  Through nights of pain and wakefulness, through days when strength runs low,

grant us your gift of patience, Lord, your calming peace to know.

5)  We come to you, O loving Lord, in our distress and pain,

in trust that through our nights and days your grace will heal, sustain.

Benediction

Shalom       (“May you be well and whole and in communion with all creation.”)
