Call to Reflection - Insights by a Friend

Who am I?

A link between generations,

The two that went before

And two that will come after.

Child – a mother

Begetter and begot.

But more than that

Tenuous generations bind me to many generations past

And many in the future

Will hold a feel of me within their personal ties.

I am strengthened or reduced

By what has gone before

And will, in turn, fortify or weaken

Those who follow on.

Still more than this

I do not walk alone.

Many, in my three score years and ten

Will tread the way beside me,

The web of life joining my life with theirs.

Maybe just for a moment our lives are one

And I can build or weaken that beside me

As they do that to me

And enhance or detract from the whole of humankind.

And if I choose to live just for myself

What strength am I withholding from my fellow man.

And more besides,

Somehow, I am linked

With worlds I cannot see – but only feel.

And do these other worlds suffer or rejoice because of me.

We like to think we are autonomous,

That we can live just as we like,

But are we, by our refusal to hold hands with our fellow man -

Behind, beside, around

Making many holes in the web of life

And threatening to bring the whole lot down.

A child - an adult

Or eternally a child until I learn the secret of the universe

And uncomplainingly fill my place within it

Giving and receiving, constructively reacting with all around me.

Spirit of Life, come unto me.

Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.

Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;

move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.

Roots hold me close; wings set me free;

Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

1)  We’ll build a land where we bind up the broken.

We’ll build a land where the captives go free,

where the oil of gladness dissolves all mourning.

Oh, we’ll build a promised land that can be.

Refrain:  Come build a land where sisters and brothers, anointed by God,

may then create peace: where justice shall roll down like waters,

and peace like an ever flowing stream.

2)  We’ll build a land where we bring the good tidings

to all the afflicted and all those who mourn.

And we’ll give them garlands instead of ashes.

Oh, we’ll build a land where peace is born. Refrain

3)  We’ll be a land building up ancient cities,

raising up devastations from old;

restoring ruins of generations.

Oh, we’ll build a land of people so bold. Refrain

4)  Come, build a land where the mantles of praises

resound from spirits once faint and once weak;

where like oaks of righteousness stand her people.

Oh, come build the land, my people we seek. Refrain

Benediction

Shalom       (“May you be well and whole and in communion with all creation.”)

                          Shalom, my friends, Shalom, my friends, Shalom, Shalom.

                            Till we meet again, Till we meet again, Shalom, Shalom.
